Caesars and Bally’s create “Mini Chinatowns” in celebration of Asian Lunar New Year Year of the Ox festivities Saturday, January 31, 2009

The Lunar New Year is marked with special decorations, dance and foods symbolic of long life, fertility and prosperity. The ballrooms at Caesars and Bally’s will be completely transformed to create miniature versions of Chinatown to help guests embrace beautiful Asian cultures during this holiday season.
In order to kick off the celebration in a grand traditional manner there will be a Lunar New Year Parade beginning at Bally’s at 2 p.m. and traveling along the world-famous Boardwalk directly into the lobby at Caesars Atlantic City.  The culmination of this parade is the wonderment of the traditional lion dance.  The opening of the lion dance begins with the Hoi Gong ceremony.  Hoi Gong translates roughly as eye opening or eye dotting.  The ceremony is held to awaken and bless the spirit of the new lion.  Once the lion has been awakened, the dance will commence and good luck and fortune will be brought to the establishment.
These unforgettable celebrations will each be open to the public at no cost throughout the day. Bally’s “Chinatown” will be open from 2 p.m. to midnight and at Caesars the Far East comes to the Palladium Ballroom at the same times from 2 p.m. to midnight.  Both festivals will dazzle audiences with live performances on stages amongst crafts and food all day with spectacular Lunar New Year Variety Shows highlighting the entertainment schedules.  Caesars will host these variety shows in the Circus Maximus Theater at 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. and Bally’s will hold the same at 7:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. Authentic performers from mainland China include Shaolin Monk Kung Fu artists, Chinese opera performers, folk and modern dancers, stilt walkers and acrobats. The festivals will also feature the dragon dances, with were originally performed during religious festivals in ancient China.
Festival guests can browse the Asian marketplace brimming with fine jewelry, hand made crafts and novelties for sale. Chinese face painters, flour doll artists, Chinese paper cutting demonstrations and Chinese “Good-Luck” calligraphers add yet another element to the excitement.
The 12-year animal zodiac calendar is part of most Asian cultures. Like its Western counterpart, the Asian Zodiac is based on the idea that people born in the same time period tend to share certain personality traits.  Those born in the year of the ox are said to be a born leader, being quite dependable and possessing an innate ability to achieve great things. As one might guess, such people are dependable, calm, and modest. Like their animal namesake, the Ox is unswervingly patient, tireless in their work, and capable of enduring any amount of hardship without complaint.
